Google Analytics is one of my favourite toys.
As such, I examine it on a weekly monthly basis to see where
my web readers are coming from. This means that I may be able to identify the company (or internet service provider) you're
coming from. This
information is strictly used for my own amusement and perhaps, in a moment of weakness, fools me into believing that what
I'm writing is important.
The Google Analytics data is never repurposed and I can never identify you personally. (that would be creepy)
All of this talk about Google Analytics brings up a good point. If you're doing competitive research be aware that your competitor, (if you're accessing the web from your company network), can tell that you (you the company not you the person) have visited their website, how many pages you looked at, and what keywords you used to get there. Frankly, I don't believe this is a big privacy issue, per se, but when I'm very focused on a competitor I do my surfing from home. That's just me. I don't like tipping my hand. I don't want to give them the satisfaction that we're spending an iota of time thinking about them.
